Musings on Afghan Girl

Writer: Nati SangNati Sang

I've been trying to peer into the mind of Midjourney and understand how does it perceive things. Usually I would ask it simple phrasing and see what appears. But here we have me just feeding it an image and then it gives me options describing what it thinks it is seeing. Very fascinating.

After choosing option 2 this is what I got:

Now this is not how the 'Afghan Girl' appears. It's interesting to see how Midjourney tends to produce attractive white women. It makes me wonder as people continue to use Midjourney, it is being trained by us artists to be biased towards attractive white women when we ask it to draw a a female. The artists afterall are the ones who decide to either upscale and keep images they want. Which rasies the question, "Did the original creators of Midjourney start this bias and are the artists themselves perpetuating this bias in Midjourney as time goes on?"
